It was confirmed by Councillor Mike Layton on Friday that he has gained the support of most of the councilors to bring about a meeting to argue the issue over the casino on Tuesday as opposed to the fact that Mayor Rob Ford has put a stop to the meeting a day prior to this.
Layton has stated that they have been in debate over this for a year and that the Toronto people have told him that they would like to see him debate over this item. He said they’ve promised them it will be happening next Tuesday.
Ford has announced on Thursday that the meeting next week was cancelled and the casino for downtown was essentially killed unless the hosting fee was over $100 million after being frustrated over the province’s delay of announcing a hosting fee.
His argument for a special meeting was unnecessary and promised to make the last blow on this debate over the casino at the upcoming regular council meeting in June. He has written in his letter to councilors that he delivered on Friday said that although this request was not initiated by Toronto, they have a duty as the selected government to give an answer to the provincial government.
Layton has been reported to state that he thinks the list of people on this letter is a grand spectrum of statements by councilors saying they’d like to see the debate through.
It was stated by Deputy Mayor Doug Holyday that the special meeting over the Toronto casino was not worth it. He goes on to say that the only thing he sees that they can accomplish is to allow Woodbine to have the expansion although it should be on their own time frame.
