The report that everyone in the online gambling industry has been waiting for, the report of the parliament of the United Kingdom’s Media & Sport Committee has been released. The report stated that the 2005 Gambling Act has caused many inconsistencies and problems.
The report also stated that more power should be given to the local authorities. The report mainly focused on the land based gambling industry in the UK. It also dealt with online gambling and addressed the problem concerning the taxation according to the place of consumption not the location of the operator.
The Mp of the committee stated by saying that the laws for gambling are old and outdated, hence they can’t deal with today’s technological and social changes. It also stated that the Dept. of Culture, Media & Sport have failed to collaborate with the Dept. of treasury when it comes to taxation. This failure resulted in the departure of most of the gambling operators from the United Kingdom to offshore locations. These offshore operators can advertise and offer their gambling services to the people in the UK market without having to pay taxes such as the operators located inside of the United Kingdom.
The report supports the idea of taxation according to the location of the consumption of the user. This way offshore operators will be taxed the same as onshore operators if they offer services in the UK market. It also stated that the Dept. of Treasury still need to collaborate with the stakeholders of the online gambling industry to succeed in reaching a convenient level for internet wagering taxation.
