Many experts and observers were speculating that the politicians of the Canadian Senate are going to see off the C-290 sports betting bill by stalling it until they adjure for the summer recess. It seems that they were right because the Senate rose and the C-290 did not progress at all. The bill has been stalling in the Senate for numerous months now. It has been in the debate state after it has received great support and approval from the House of Commons and it is gaining much more support from the governments of 9 provinces as well as the Gaming Association of Canada.
This week, the gaming association has stated how disappointed and frustrated it is that the Senate of Canada chose not to discuss and deal with the C-290 Sports betting Bill. The Chief Executive of the Gaming Association, Bill Rutsey stated that the shameful inaction and the delaying tactics that the Senators are pulling would only fuel illegal offshore bookmakers and organized crime. This is because they are the online ones who are profiting from this delay. He also mentioned that there are tens of billions that are bet by Canadian players and this great amount of money ends up in the hands of organized crime and illegal offshore bettors. He added that it seems that the Senate is comfortable with such outcome since they do not see any problem or urgency in dealing with it. This sports betting bill would allow for single sports betting since Canadians are only allowed to place bets on a series of games and not a single game.
