As a result of the momentum and the drive for legalizing gambling on single sporting matches, a new poll was conducted by Ipsos Red on behalf of the Gaming Association of Canada. This poll shows that two 1/3s of Canadians, which represents 64%, think that the senate should approve and pass the bill that will legalize betting on single sport events. This means that 36% of Canadians are against it and thought that the Senate should refuse the bill and prevent it from being passed into law. The Canadian Senate is currently considering the bill in question. It has passed the third reading through the House of Commons where it got a unanimous support from all of the existing parties and it also has the support of 8 provincial governments.
In Canada, according to the current laws, placing wagers on any single sporting match is not legal. Gaming corporations and provincial lotteries offer Canadians a system where wagers can be placed on multiple sports games in the form of parlays but not on a single sports event.
The Gaming Association of Canada predicts that Canadians currently place more than ten billion dollars every year on sports bets through illegal bookmakers and another four billion dollars per year through sports books that are located at offshore locations. It also estimated that only five percent of the bets are made through legal channels while 95% of the bets are done through illegal channels and offshore bookmakers. This information is among the reasons that caused the nationwide support to legalize this kind of gambling because people are gambling anyway, so legalizing it will offer them security and it will benefit the country in the form of taxes.
