Canadian Gaming Association Further Supports Bill C-290

The proposed Bill, the C-290 is getting more support from the Canadian Gaming Association as it has instituted a counter through its website that aims to support the bill. This counter aims to gauge the amount of cash that is being used to illegally place wagers on sporting events through illegal and offshore internet sports betting websites that allow for single sports wagering.

This bill was proposed to the House of Commons by Joe Comartin as a Private Member bill back in 2001. Now, it is asking the Senate of Canada to bring this bill and vote on it. If this bill is voted on and passed, it is going to delete section 207-4-b of the Criminal Code of the country that prevents any bets on a single sporting event or a fight. This bill has already succeeded in passing through a reading at the  House of Commons in 2012 but the Canadian Senate is still in the process of debating it.

The CEO of the Canadian Gaming Association has stated that this bill has been in the Senate of Canada for more than 470 days. He also added that during this long period, Canadian sports bettors have wagered more than 18 billion dollars through offshore and illegal internet sports books or local sportsbooks that are owned by organized crime organizations. This makes it clear that Canadian sports bettors want an alternative to the current sports betting laws and that they want single sports wagering, which is exactly what the C-290 bill is trying to do.
